Beat 2010.

Ten Of The Best 2010

Paul Weller / Wake Up The Nation
The Jam legend’s astonishing middle-age resurgence continues with an album as relevant as any in Weller’s 30 + year career. Wired and angry, jagged and exciting. The 16 tracks zoom by in under 40 minutes. Quite unique in it’s execution and impact.

Gil Scott-Heron / I’m New Here
A short but welcome return from one of the true godfathers of rap after a long period of drug addiction and prison. Heron’s natural honesty and charisma is matched with a wide range of sonic atmostpheres and beats.

Gorillaz / Plastic Beach
A release to stand alongside best work Albarn’s ever been involved with and a new benchmark for collaborative music as a whole. A meeting place for some great musical adventures with Mick Jones and Paul Simonon together again as well as Lou Reed, Bobby Womack, Mark E Smith and others all there to lend a helping hand.

Neil Young / Le Noise
Just Neil in a room with master producer Daniel Lanois at the controls. It could have been a recipe for indulgence but instead Young has created his best album since 'Harvest Moon' in ´92

Deerhunter / Halcyon Digest
'Halcyon Digest' continues Deerhunter’s impressive winning streak. Minimal arrangements, warm tones and melodic songs. With this album Deerhunter produced their most amitious work yet, as well as their most accessible.

Phosphorescent / Here’s To Taking It Easy
Martin Houck’s latest release is the fifth full-length album from Phosphorescent and was recorded with the same band that delivered ”To Willie,” his cover tribute to hero Willie Nelson. Blues riffs, slide guitar, horns and alt-country accoustics in songs that rest between love and heartache, celebration and mourning.

Grinderman / Grinderman 2
Often hilarious, this is the sound of middle-age men mixing horror with black humour (Worm Tamer’s priceless line: ”My baby calls me the Loch Ness monster. Two great big humps and I’m gone”) in songs that mix garage swamp blues with primitive psychedelic distorted Rock ”n” Roll. There are few opportunities to catch your breath.

Jenny & Johnny / I’m Having Fun Now
Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice have been creatively and romantically involved for half a decade. On this joint project they strum and harmonize their way through a selection of upbeat, loose and carefree songs. The album looks back to California in the 1970’s, whilst at the same time maintaining a modern pop feel. They are in love. They are rocking out. They are just having fun now!

Edwyn Collins / Losing Sleep
Back in 2005 Edwyn Collins suffered two cerebral haemorrhages. This album’s very existence is testament to his determination and lust for life and for music. This is a work full of effortless songs that meld 60’s pop, new wave cool and classic tunes that are uplifting and catchy. Is Collins fully recovered? If we focus on ”Losing Sleep”, then the answer must be a resounding ”Yes.”

The Black Keys / Brothers
An album which combines the classic and contemporary perspectives on Blues. Soul, RnB and Rock . A little on the long side (not every track works), this album however finds the band writing some of their best songs to date.”
